In the eary 2000's a film called "Van Wilder" was released into theaters. This was the major debut of an actor named "Ryan Reynolds." Ryan Reynolds was the New Chevy Chase. He still might be.
Reynolds was mostly rejected by filmmgoers then and for years after, despite repeated attempts by Hollywood Handlers to shove him down people's throats.
However, all's well now as Reynolds has landed on his feet in 2009 with a SOLID HIT, "The Proposal," which (unfortunately) spells repeated sightings, and violent throat thrustings, of this dubious talent for innocent viewers.
In the past, Reynolds was repeatedly labeled "Chevy Chase-like" in so many words by the media. He was a New Chevy Chase.
The criteria for such a designation is mysterious, and could possibly be mutating fast, because Jason Segel, an actor who appeared in the canceled NBC show "Freaks and Geeks," who is completely unlike New Chevy Chase Ryan Reynolds, has now been dubbed by Hollywood a New Chevy Chase.
I suppose if you cast a very, very, very wide net over both Reynolds and Segel, you might come away with the idea that being a New Chevy Chase means being a bloated, sweaty, goofball.
Note: The old Chevy Chase was never bloated or sweaty.
According to the principles of supply and demand, the value of being a New Chevy Chase is set for a fall.
